Tips for Cold and Flu Season

This year, enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) is causing an increase in severe respiratory illness in North Carolina and in the United States. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, and fever. Children who have asthma or a history of wheezing can become very ill if infected. It is important for children with asthma to always take their prescribed medication as directed and follow their asthma action plans.  Call your child's doctor if your child is having difficulty breathing, if you feel you are unable to control symptoms, or if symptoms are getting worse.  Because there is no vaccine for EV-D68, follow these steps to avoid getting sick:
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Avoid close contact or sharing items with people who are sick.
  • Catch your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or shirt sleeve, not your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect high touch surfaces, such as toys, water fountains and doorknobs.
  • Stay home if you are sick and keep sick children out of school until 24 hours after their fever has passed. They should also be feeling well enough to participate in activities.
  • Anyone over 6 months of age should get the flu vaccine.

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids!

School is stressful enough, let's make it as HAPPY as we can! Each year at Mars Hill Elementary School we have a theme to help us keep a focus, increase our school spirit and see the bigger picture of what school is about, not just what happens in the classrooms. Our theme for 2014-2015 is "Learning and Leading" and it will focus on "The Seven Habits of Happy Kids!" This series on leadership and development is targeted for elementary children and should be very exciting for our school. Take time to learn a bit more about the seven habits.

Investigations Math - The New Math Program for Madison County
Parents - Madison County has adopted a new math curriclum called "Investigations Math."  This curriculum will be used in all elementary schools beginning in August 2014.  Administrators and teachers will go through several days of extensive training prior to using it for instruction.  It is important that you, as parents and families, understand some of the changes this math curriclum will create.  Click here to learn more about it.
Exceptional Children's Assistance Center

Recycling Inkjet Printer Cartridges

You can help our school by donating old inkjet printer cartridges.  Rather than throw them away, why not recycle them and help the school at the same time?  We have a collection bin in the main lobby where you can drop them off.  Thanks for your support!
